While talking to hundreds of technicians all over the country, I asked them flat out, "What are some things that would have a significant impact on your decision-making process when comparing two businesses to work for?" Overwhelmingly the top two were; knowing the full story of the business and seeing video testimonials from the current team.
1. Company Story: Understanding the story of a business provides valuable insights into its history, mission, values, and overall trajectory. It can give a job seeker a better sense of the company's culture, vision, and long-term goals. If the story resonates with them and aligns with their values and aspirations, it may tip the scale in favor of your shop.
2. Video Testimonials: Video testimonials from the current team members can provide a more personal and authentic perspective about the work environment, company culture, and overall employee satisfaction. Hearing directly from employees can give someone looking for a shop to build their career a glimpse into their experiences, challenges, growth opportunities, and the support they will receive. Positive testimonials can be influential and help them gauge whether the company fosters a supportive, engaging, and rewarding work environment.
And while these factors can be highly informative, the people we talked with also considered a few other essential factors. Here are a few additional aspects to take into account:
Job Role and Responsibilities: People I talked with always try to consider whether the job role aligns with their skills, interests, and long-term career goals. They assess each business's potential for professional growth, learning opportunities, and advancement.
Compensation and Benefits: All job seekers look at salary, benefits, and perks. Most evaluated the overall compensation package, including health benefits, retirement plans, vacation policies, and other relevant incentives.
Work-Life Balance: For many, the work-life balance practices within each business are a key consideration. They look at factors such as flexible working hours, remote work options, and policies that support employee well-being.
Company Size and Stability: Many mentioned the size and stability of each business. For some, a larger shop that offers more resources and structured career paths is the best. Others preferred smaller companies that seemed to provide a more entrepreneurial and close-knit team environment.
Industry Reputation: I heard from several people I talked with that they take the time to research each shop's reputation within its industry. They considered factors such as market position, growth potential, and public perception in the decision process.
By considering all these factors holistically, including the story of the business and video testimonials from the current team, the techs and services writers I talked with told me they could make a more informed decision about which business would be the best fit for them.
